Mathew Hopkins’ methods of interrogation were unjust and inhumane. He was led to believe that an attempt on the King’s life was to be made by something otherworldly and distinctly evil. The Church was afraid that the Devil himself would ascend from Hell and take control of the throne. Their hope was that the faith of Hopkins, the Church and the common Christian folk would expel this evil presence. Corrupted souls were given the ultimatum of finding peace with God, or an endless suffering in the eternal flames of Hell. Justice was unfair and biased, with the alleged perpetrator condemned without fair trial.
